Upon receiving this device, the motherboard was faulty causing intermittent graphics issues. I sent the device in for repair, and it returned with a similar issue. 2 years later the bluetooth is no longer working. I purchased another ROG laptop a bit later, and it is experiencing the same bluetooth issues conveniently after the warranty has expired. I contacted support a number of times, and ASUS was not accommodating. I purchased the device because I needed it immediately. I expressed to ASUS customer service that my need for a replacement computer immediately, however, I was told no, and had to send the laptop into the warranty department and wait TWO weeks for it to be returned. It was returned with the same issue!!! I had no choice at the time, but to accept the faulty screen tearing graphic's issues as a new part of my life :). The decision to not contact Amazon for an immediate return and refund eventually led to a computer exhibiting faulty behavior in many areas of Windows not isolated to the graphics errors before eventually having critical hardware failures of bluetooth, wireless, and graphics. To put this in perspective, I purchased a Dell laptop that lasted 10 years under considerably rougher usage conditions. The Dell laptop was only replaced for a processor and graphics card upgrade/update, not because of faulty hardware.
I believe ASUS is using poor quality motherboards and/or components in their relatively well priced laptops. I had been a long time fan of ASUS products, and considered them a leader in the sector of computer hardware and components, however, I recommend not purchasing from ASUS now or at any point in the future regardless of their past prestige whether real or imagined.
I warmly hope this review reaches you, and makes you smile :)
As a veteran IT guy, I know how to properly take care of a laptop... however within the three years I've had this machine, I've had to purchase a new battery because it stopped holding a charge MUCH sooner than it should have, a new power adapter because the original one just stopped working, a new LCD screen because the old one just stopped working for no reason, and now it's pending me dropping $400 on a MOTHERBOARD because it no longer recognizes a wifi card nor will display anything on the LCD. I've always recommended ASUS to everyone, but I've had sooo many problems out of this one, in good conscious, I no longer can. For a $1200 laptop (at the time of purchase), I'm having to spend half that within a three year period because the issues that happened YEARS before they should have, weren't covered by the manufacturer's warranty...

Update: The hard drive went kaput after 16 months, I lost a lot of data.I bought a new hard drive, same SSD as the original, but now it's been a month since the fix and it frequently crashes and often fails to boot unless I go mess with the bios. It's pretty close to dead.In the last 25 years, most of my computing components, desk top computers, and laptops usually last at least 5 years. This was a mid/high end product at the time of purchase and it is very disappointing to have a 18 month life span.Asus used to mean quality and longevity, that trust is gone.Downgraded to 1 star.
Below is the original review, keeping that the same. Had this for more than six months now, nothing broke and everything works as good as new.
First the negatives: When it was new, one of the keys didn't press down all the way, it works, but one of the corners on that key didn't go down at all and it was super annoying. So I had to pop it out and trim a tiny piece off in that corner to fix it.Not a big deal if you have ever popped off a key before, but might be annoying to some. That is really the only thing wrong with it quality wise.
Switching between the integrated and Nvidia graphics had some issues in the past, but a driver update fixed it.
There are minor annoyances with the keyboard lighting, but that is really getting down the to nitty gritty.
It didn't have the option to use Win7, but that's more a Win8 issue than a laptop issue.I installed a UI shell right away and been happy enough ever since.
That's really it on the things that bothered me at all.Given the price and the overall performance and experience, I do not feel this warranted taking off any stars.
The overall experience: The laptop is a good mid range gaming computer and good enough to handle most of the current games at mid graphics settings.I haven't tried the latest and greatest FPS on it, the most I use this for are some MMOs and MOBAS, but it handles them without any problems.Besides high end games and high end CAD usage, it will handle anything else for a typical home or office user.
For daily work and home usage: MS Office suite, light CAD work, web surfing, watching videos, etc, it doesn't break a sweat.
I am very happy with the decision to spring for the SSD plus 1T HDD, it starts up WIN8 in about 10 seconds and I have not experienced the stutters that I've felt with every other laptop I owned before.I believe that the computer should be waiting for me, and never the other way around.Higher end desktops with SSD will also give similar experience, but this is the first laptop where it's been true.So quite happy about that.If the price difference is not a big issue, I would definitely recommend it.
The screen is sharp, but it is only 15 inches, I knew that going in.And I have not had any issues with it in any lighting condition.I never used it outside on a sunny day, but near a window in Starbucks on a sunny day was no issue.Haven't noticed any dead pixles, I checked very carefully when it was new, and although I didn't do the same check before writing the review, I've never noticed any during regular usage.Lately, it's been hooked up to an external 27 inch display, and the performance was not affected at all, even though the resolution is much higher.I was happily surprised by that.
The speakers are above average for a laptop; and on an absolute scale, they are good, but not great.Even though I bought some nice external speakers for home use, I would say the speakers are good enough that I didn't have to if I didn't want to.
Battery performance was average, I got around 3 hours offline using office software and around 2 hours if playing games. Not terrific, but it's in line with what I expect for a gaming laptop.
Cooling has not been an issue even after 6 months, it's barely warm to the touch when not gaming, and warm but not hot when gaming. It's noticeably better than other laptops I've owned before.
I was never a fan of any touch pad, the one on this laptop works well enough for what it is.I try to use a mouse whenever possible.
There are enough ports for what I use it for, and the wireless works as expected, these are things that are good by virtue of never becoming an issue.
It's not upgraded to Win10 yet, but that's more because of my feelings about MS than with the laptop.
4.0 out of 5 starsBuena compra, algunas fallas de sistema

UPDATE 2/15/17:It's been about a year and a half of HEAVY use of this, for business purposes. No problems. It runs an average of 6-7 days/week about 8-12hrs a day.And knock on wood zero trouble with anything yet. That should speak volumes. There are lemons in a any product line, expensive or not, but this one's been a gem.
4.5 stars out of 5.This computer packs a lot of guts for the price.Looks very nice, has an aluminum (looking) shell, black keys on silver face.It does what I need it to do and nothing else has the 5th generation i7 processor at this pricepoint PLUS HD screen PLUS backlit keypad. This is my 3rd Acer in 10 years. My first Acer laptop is still running, somewhere around 9 or 10 years old.Say what you want, but I think they are solid machines for their price.
This model comes with: -matte screen -HD 1080p resolution -backlit keypad (which toggles on or off) -5th generation Intel i7 5500U processor -8 GB RAM(capacity of 16 GB) -1 TB 5400rpm HDD -Dedicated graphics via NVIDIA GeForce 840M 2GB, PLUS Intel HD (each has its own settings) -6 cell, 7hr Li-ion battery -Removable, replaceable battery -Windows 8.1 (free upgrade to Windows 10 if you choose) -Dolby Home Theater sound -Two down-firing speakers located on the front-bottom, sound is less than ideal because of this orientation, but plenty loud -One 3.0 USB port and two 2.0 USB ports -Charger adapter cord -Charger jack on right side near hinge (aren't they normally on the left?) -Multi-gesture mouse/trackpad, with pinch 'n zoom and built in no-line R and L click buttons -Built-in 720p webcam -Some bloatware programs, mostly Acer branded stuff -Up/down left/right arrows on keypad also adjust your volume and screen brightness, respectively, with use of the Function ("Fn") key. This location is unique to Acer's keyboard design and I love having those controls right where I know they are instead of having to scan up at the many F keys. -MIMO wireless antenna(s), whatever that is.Supposed to increase signal and speed. In my upstairs where I used to get 2-3 bars of wireless signal on my old laptop, I now get a full 4 bars on this one.
This computer does NOT come with: -DVD/CD optical drive -Any backup or install discs -No scrolling via mouse trackpad like some models had/have -No easy access panel to HDD and RAM on the bottom panel -Obviously no current updates, Windows Update has millions (it seems) of updates to download and hours and hours of installing and restarting. This is true of any new computer though.
I am happy with this purchase, I am not at all inclined to return the computer. The matte screen took a little getting used to, it puts a slightly softer hue on the colors, but they are still rich and it gets plenty bright, and it does limit much of the glare that glossy screens reflect. The sound isn't as crisp as it could be due to the down-firing speakers located on the bottom of the computer.I find this very odd, since in my experience they've always been on top, up-firing.When I tip the computer back, the speakers sound much better when they fire straight at you.Oh well, you can't have everything perfect or you'd pay nearly double.I read other users saying the keyboard has a hump in it, I do not notice this at all.If it actually does, it's so minor I can't see it.Perhaps certain ones had this and not others?I also read another reviewer saying the keys were weak, and that if you press one key down a couple other keys beside it would depress a little- again, this is not my experience. The keys are responsive, crisp and quiet. You could type in a library without bothering people. One thing I do notice is that the number lock seems to default to "off" every time I restart the computer, which is annoying.IMO number lock should always default to "on".The trackpad doesn't have the 'scroll' feature on the R-side.On my previous Acer the tight R side had a swiper built in that allowed you to scroll up & down on pages like the wheel of a mouse, except with your finger obviously. This was addicting for many years and I really miss it.
I hope to have this computer a good 8-10 years as I've come to expect from Acer.

I intend to update this review when I've had some more time using the product, to see how it holds up.I bought a used version of this laptop from the Amazon Warehouse, because at <$400 for an i7 processor, dedicated graphics card, and getting to stick with Windows 8.1 over 10, I felt like I was getting a pretty sweet deal.Moving up from my most recent Samsung ATIV Book 2, this computer has noticeably better sound quality and volume, if it seems a little tinny at times (I'm not much of an audiophile so it's not a huge sticking point for me).The build is pretty solid, though the screen is thin and easy to bend with the hand; I would never set anything much heavier than a hardback novel on top of it. Some other reviews have complained about the quality of the screen, but it appears to be a perfectly normal matte. No issues there.
The big problem with this machine is actually the trackpad software. From the moment I first turned it on, I was pretty shocked at how bad it felt.It is massively oversensitive, to the point that lifting your finger to click jerks the cursor several millimeters away from the thing you are trying to select.Something as simple as grabbing the hitbox for expanding or shaping a window is an exercise in patience, and the two-finger scroll only engages about 65% of the time you try to use it.There are also no Synaptics or Elantech settings available in the Control Panel so that you can attempt to fix any of these problems.Acer has instead decided that the the mouse and touchpad settings should be integrated into the Windows 8.1 Metro interface, where the customization options are extremely limited and none of them fix the problem. It is awful to use.
The good (?) news is that I found a workaround: Don't use Windows.I was already planning on dual-booting this computer with Linux Mint and using Windows exclusively for moderate gaming and digital art, neither of which are trackpad-appropriate.When running Mint, the trackpad works fine and is comfortably responsive without being oversensitive.Two-finger scroll works exactly when you need it to and a terminal command even gets the drag lock working.I take my computer away from its desk frequently and use it for word processing without bringing the mouse, so having a good trackpad is a necessity for me.If it is for you too, avoid this model (possibly all Acer V-series computers running 8.1?) or get yourself a different OS.
I have a couple more weeks to decide if I want to keep the laptop or return it.I don't know where else I'm going to be able to get these specs for the price, but the keyboard also seems to have a delay associated with the letter "i', which I see most often in the word "point." Point point ponit point ponit ponit ponit.See?I swear it's not me.
EDIT MARCH 2018: Have been using this machine for about five months now and felt I should make note here the position of the speakers, which point out the bottom. On a desk the computer gets good volume, but when placed on a soft surface (like your lap) sound is extremely muted.Worth considering.
I got this for around $650 4 months ago so i have had time to get use to it. If you are well versed is computers then you should know a i7 with a dedicated graphics chip is a steal at this price. The computer is completely made out of plastic, but it is a solid computer. The back lit keyboard is awesomely unexpected at this price, but its nice to have that option. The screen is just ok, it is full 1080p but the antiglare really diminishes the look. I did some gaming and it can handle midrange games no problem. If you are looking to play the latest games like BF4 then you could play it with all the settings on low. It doesn't have a optical drive, but it does have a slot for one. If anyone knows the parts I need to put an ssd in that slot please reply. My one complaint is about the computers trackpad. There are no physical right or left click buttons The trackpad is one big button and you have to click on the left or right side to click or right click respectively. This makes it hard to browse because you can forget which side of the trackpad you are on if you are not always looking down at it. You should get a external mouse if you don't want to be constantly annoyed with this trackpad. The pc is a little slow on boot up but all in all the computer is a steal at this price, very happy with it so far.

A relative bought this for their daughter in college. They asked me to help them change some settings and play around with it since I'm an IT professional. Honestly, it will work for basic surfing, email, office products, and a few other applications. But, as soon as you open a few, it starts to bog down. Also, windows 8.1 is a piece of crap in my opinion. It was riddled with issues doing auto updates. I fixed it, but a computer should not be like that right off the bat. The casing is ok. Feels a lil cheap. The keyboard is also not as sensitive as I'd like it. For the price of 300 or less, I think it is ok. But, I'd rather recommend you continue to save money and invest on an i3 or better AMD processor for $20-$100 more.
bought this laptop as a replacement, wouldn't boot up.I got a series of beeps and a screen saying the battery was defective.Bought a new battery here for 90 bucks and installed it and the machine still wouldn't boot.Ran diagnostics and found that it also needed a CMOS battery for the mother board.Of course the laptop is 2 years old and doesn't have a warranty from Dell, I can purchase an extended warranty for 200 dollars but is it really worth it for a 270 dollar computer?I could have spent the same amount of money at Best Buy for a working out of the box computer.I have it up and running and my GF loves it so that's the saving grace about this whole ordeal. The buyer should be made aware that there might be issues with discontinued stock or at least the seller should power the units up before selling them and adjust the pricing according to the issues with the units.
Started having a problem right after the initial setup. There is a warning that reads "Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to operational temperature."Thought it might be overheating but after shutting it off for over an hour I'm still getting the message.

I owned this computer for a year and had nothing but problems with it from about a month in. The computer would constantly shut itself down in the middle of me doing something with no warning. I often had problems with the computer throwing error messages that couldn't be explained and restarting on it's own. This computer is absolutely horrible and the fact that I needed to buy a new computer after less than a year of owning this one because I couldn't take the headaches anymore is a real pain. Stay away. Complete junk.
I needed a windows 8, sadly the only one I could get at the time was a Dell, which has never been a good PC. It's slow to start, the touch pad is really touchy and I mean that in the extreme negative. There was a years back I repaired computers, I loved Dell then because everyone that had one needed repairs... a real money maker for me. Well, I have a very limited use for this Dell, so little in fact that it might actually hold up. But if you are looking to use it as a real PC, forget about it.
Dell... very disappointed. After a string of good systems from Dell, this one was a total bust!I am fairly "computer savvy", but this one even frustrated me.Having it for about 48 house, I never did really have any luck without it "hanging" or "crashing".How did this system pass QC?? Or has Dell abandoned quality for volume sales & more profit?"Back in the day" folks paid a little more for a Dell because they were well vetted before they were marketed or shipped. Are those days over Dell?
I really didn't think I needed much of a laptop for what I use it for, but web pages are incredibly slow to load, and the graphics from something simple like streaming is impossible. The picture is fuzzy and jolts. I put it next to the laptop I replaced with this one and the picture is crystal clear, so it's not my internet connection. I can't even use google hangouts. If you want ANY kind of video quality, skip this and get an HP. I wish I had. This is just terrible.
Ever since the first time I turned this laptop on, whenever it's being booted up or shut down it will start beeping repeatedly and EXPLOSIVELY loudly for anywhere from two to ten minutes. WHY?HOW DO I TURN THIS OFF?
Aside from that I'm enjoying my laptop a lot. It freezes up for short periods of time on occasion if I leave it on for too long, but that's mostly my fault and it never lasts long and works perfectly besides that. But the infernal screeching is driving me up the wall. I live in an apartment complex and it's massively inappropriate to house anything making this much noise on a regular basis and not using my computer isn't really an option for me. Has anyone else had this problem? Can someone tell me how to fix it?
