At first I was quite hesitant to buy this laptop, I had seen mixed reviews concerning the lack of support for 4k as well as those who say that 4k "isn't worth the price tag" at this point in time and I almost decided to go with a cheaper laptop with a gtx 970m vs the quite weak gtx 960m in this laptop.
Looking back on my prior worries now that I own the laptop, I can now say for certain a few things that other reviewers (who are mainly focused on gaming) and other youtube parties might disagree with.
Pros: -4k is definitely worth it, I have no eye strain after looking at this laptop for hours and the super nice and crisp background never fails to put a smile on my face every day -512 gb Pci-E SSD is not fast, but INSANELY FAST.The laptop starts up within 5-10 seconds, about the same time it takes to wake up from sleep mode, which is ludicrously fast.As a college student, this is great as I can shut down my laptop in between classes to conserve battery and start it right back up in time for my next class later in the day or if I want to study at the library. -Form factor is beautiful, the sleek black brushed aluminum doesn't only look good, but adds incredible stability and integrity to the case, allowing for minimal amounts of frame bending and a solid feel to the laptop.On top of this, the laptop is very light (because of the aluminum) and is great to carry around (no back strain whatsoever). -Fan noise is amazingly quiet; Its quieter than most ultrabooks and even other laptops out on the market.It's perfect for a library environment or a class environment. This laptop guarantees that your laptop will not be the loudest most annoying laptop in the library or during class.
Cons: -Laptop's gtx 960m is a little low on power if you are looking to play new 2015 titles such as shadow of mordor and similar games, HOWEVER, league of legends, tf2 and cs: go run flawlessly at the native 4k resolution, some even at maximum graphics settings. -The color scheme is showy and attracts a LOT of attention (this could also be a plus if you wanna show off your new baby but I myself prefer keeping a lower profile)

EDIT: Had to return the laptop after a month of use as the trackpad popped out of its socket, build quality may not be up to spec so I detracted 2 stars from my original rating... If I buy a $1600 laptop I expect that the trackpad doesn't pop out after 1 month of use :(.
EDIT 2: Got my return laptop and instantly noticed something inside was blocking the fan, had to return that one as well as once I opened it up, I realized there was a note blocking the fan which said, and I quote "Keyboard is broken and not working correctly" in traditional Chinese.Not only did I see this as bad but unreasonable for such a large company to have basically no QA as to even start the laptop out and listen for such a note which would block the fans.In total I decided to go with a refurbished Razer Blade 2014 and I LOVE it, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a RELIABLE laptop rather than gambling on if they would get one of these which work well or come with a note saying that it is broken inside.

I can't believe how fast this machine is! I hate the startup speed of laptops: I almost never shut them down. With this laptop, hibernate, sleep, startup all take about the same. Now I shut down frequently.
Came with a headset and mouse.
The headset is great - nice bass, no tweaking for voice, just plug-n-play. I've only used the mouse once so I really can't comment on it. It'll take some getting used to with the thumb buttons. The one thing I can say about it: it felt good.
I had an in-game brightness issue switching from a 1920x1080 game to the 3840x2160 desktop resolution. Lowering the desktop resolution to 1920x1080 fixed it. Upping the game resolution makes the fonts too difficult to read on the small laptop screen. But... that's what external monitors are for.
I was a little hesitant because of the number of low ratings this unit was receiving. I've had no immediate issues with it. Very sharp, bright, crisp display. Great keyboard feel. I was pleased the W button had a ridge!
Buyer Beware! The SSD speed will have you spoiled in no time.
This laptop was great while it lasted. For the steep price tag of $1600 I didn't expect this to happen just 3 years after purchase. I had a Lenovo for at least a year before this that I sold to my brother and his is still working great. I keep my electronics clean and treat them with proper care and maintenance and this is the last time I will purchase anything from Asus.

I didn't like the original partitioning as the C volume didn't have enough space to fit in my user profile from my old computer. Had to use diskpart to extend the size of the C volume so now it's fixed.
Not an expert but my initial impression of the screen was the resolution might be better than my previous laptop but dimmer in brightness.I turned up the brightness as far as it would go but still feels slightly dim.It certainly looks different.Overall though I'm not sure if it's an improvement.
I play a game called Space Engineers which gives the option to render in DX9 or DX11.The DX11 looks better compared to DX9 on my prior laptop(XPS-15 2013) but on the new ASUS the DX11 makes things look fuzzier compared to DX9. In response I had to switch over to the DX9 renderer.Also, the gaming sound gives out intermittent crackling noise.Maybe a sound driver needs to be updated.
Anyone have suggestions on how to fix the brightness and DX11 rendering issues? Thx in advance for any help.

I bought this laptop (ASUS G501JW-DS71) one week back. It worked great for a few days. Yesterday, I saw the laptop's display woke up from sleep with a high frequency flicker. It stayed like that for a few minutes and then became normal again. I saw a BIOS update (#209) from ASUS that (methinks) talks about fixing this issue ("Fixed eDP Panel Power Sequence not correct after S3 resume, Panel will abnormal after wake up0 from panel-off.") (sic). Let's hope it gets fixed. If the screen flickering can be resolved, then this is a great laptop. (and then I will increase the stars)
Update: The BIOS update resolved the issue. The screen did not flicker even once in the past 6 weeks (right after installing the BIOS update) and I am completely satisfied. Everyone should update their BIOS to resolve this issue. I am loving everything about this laptop. Kudos to ASUS.
